James Bay New Horizons held a scooter parade on May 15th. The objective of this special event was to allow our members and residents of James Bay to voice their safety concerns about the condition of sidewalks and streets in the area that they encounter throughout their daily routine while riding a motorized scooter. The event was conducted by Chris Foord from the CRD Capital Regional District) Traffic Safety Commission. Victoria city councilor Chris Coleman and city transportation staff member Alex Angus also attended. Participants were welcome to ask questions, state concerns, and pinpoint areas of greatest unease on a map for Alex to take back to his co-workers. MEDIchair was kind enough to come to our Centre with several scooters. The company gave a presentation on safety, how to select an appropriate scooter, and the future trends in scooter appearance and features. After the presentations participants were sent on one of two routes through James Bay. For many, including Alex, this was their first time on a scooter. Giggles were heard from every direction, and we are happy to report that everyone returned safely. The scooter parade ended at our Centre with refreshments (including cupcakes from Ooh La La) and several draws of prizes ranging from scooter tune-ups, Thrifty Foods Smile Cards and gift cards for Serious Coffee. Many thanks to our sponsors: the City of Victoria, the CRD Traffic Safety Commission, MEDIchair and HandiDART. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CpuaQ1uCDE -- Sherri Dixon, program coordinator
